Desktop license and edit permissions
Desktop Siter requires a license key to enable edit permissions. Without a valid key, the desktop client opens read-only — the user can view existing projects but cannot create features, edit attributes, or run analysis. This lesson walks through entering the key and confirming that edit operations are unlocked.
By the end of this lesson you should be able to:
- Locate and enter your desktop license key
- Confirm that edit permissions are active
- Identify what to do if the key is rejected or revoked
Read-only vs edit-enabled
Without a valid license key, the desktop client runs in read-only mode:
- Existing projects open and display normally
- Map navigation, layer toggling, and result viewing all work
- The Calculate, edit-feature, and add-feature controls are disabled
- Drawings can be viewed but not generated or modified
Once a valid key is entered, the client unlocks edit-enabled mode and the disabled controls become available.
Entering the license key
- Sign in with Windows
- Select Admin
- Select Licensing
- Select Default
- Copy and Paste your license key into the "License Text" box (The key is provided by Siter administrators)
- Select Save
Confirming edit permissions are active
- While still in the Default page, select Users (underneath Done)
- Verify Editor is displayed next to your name
- If you see Readonly, click Readonly until it displays Editor
After entering the key and verifying your user permissions, confirm the client is in edit-enabled mode by:
- Opening a project you have edit access to
- Checking that the Calculate button is enabled in the toolbar
- Trying to add a feature — if the add-feature flow is available, edit permissions are active
When the key is rejected
A license key may fail to validate for several reasons:
- Typo or wrong key — re-enter from the source carefully
- Expired key — request a new one from your administrator
If you have any issues applying your licensing key, contact Siter helpdesk at Siter@TheSchreiferGroup.com
Try it
Open the desktop client without a license key entered (or after clearing one) and confirm that edit controls are disabled. Enter a valid key, restart the client if required, and confirm the controls are now available.
